The Convergence Crisis

A World Transformed

One hundred years ago, two worlds collided. Moral choices determined who gained magic—and who lost it forever.

The Great Convergence

Valenhall: An industrial world of steam power and engineering—no magic, all standard fantasy races living in relative harmony.

Aethermoor: A high-magic realm of exotic beings and powerful arcane traditions.

The Shadowlands: A dimension whose existence requires spreading into other realities. Not conquest for conquest's sake—but existential expansion.

When the Shadows invaded Aethermoor, desperate mages merged their world with Valenhall to survive. Two worlds became one—forever.

The World's Judgment

When the worlds merged, each race of Valenhall responded differently to the Aethermoor refugees. The world itself judged their choices:

  • Elves & Gnomes welcomed refugees → Gained full magical access
  • Dwarves, Halflings, Orcs provided protection → Limited magical abilities
  • Humans tried to kill/expel refugees → Lost all magic forever

The hierarchy reversed. Humans fell from 60% majority rulers to struggling minority. Orcs rose from outcasts to respected defenders.

Major Factions

Human Restoration Movement
Anti-magic movement seeking to restore human dominance after losing their magical connection.
Conclave of Memories
Aethermoor council preserving magical heritage and culture of the refugee peoples.
Steam Parliament
Coalition government attempting to unite all peoples and maintain peace between factions.
Shadow Defense
Protectors who stand against periodic Shadow incursions from the dimension that forced the Convergence.

Persistent Consequences

  • Crime detection with witnesses
  • Reputation tracking across locations
  • Faction relationships that evolve
  • Guards remember your face

Ongoing Threats

  • Periodic Shadow incursions
  • Human resentment and anti-magic movements
  • Magical supremacy conflicts
  • Cultural integration struggles

Your choices define you. Support the restoration of human power, preserve Aethermoor traditions, seek unity through the Parliament, or defend against the Shadows. Every decision shapes your legend.

Consequences Matter

Crime & Punishment

Every merchant's coin purse is a choice. Every locked door a temptation. Get caught? Face trials, serve time, plan escapes, or wait for a daring companion rescue.

Every Crime Detected
Pick a pocket, break a lock, attack a guard - the world notices. Witnesses report you. Guards respond based on severity.
Trials & Sentencing
Face justice in court. Your reputation, evidence, and choices determine the verdict. Bribe judges, intimidate witnesses, or accept your fate.
Prison & Escape
Serve your time or plan your breakout. Each escape attempt gets harder. Failed attempts extend your sentence. Success adds 1,000g to your bounty.
Companion Rescues
Loyal companions may attempt daring prison breaks. They risk their own freedom to save yours. Will they succeed or get captured trying?
Bounties & Wanted Status
Your crimes follow you. Wanted posters with your name. Guards recognize your face. Higher bounties mean more danger - and more opportunities.
Reputation Consequences
Merchants refuse service. Quest givers turn you away. Guards patrol extra carefully. Or embrace infamy and build a criminal empire.

"I stole from the wrong merchant. Guards chased me through Port Harmony. Got caught, served 3 days, then Finnick broke me out. Now we're both wanted."
